Day 1: Zhujiajiao Water Town
Located in the Qingpu District of Shanghai, Zhujiajiao Water Town is a 1,700-year-old town that boasts well-preserved Ming and Qing Dynasty architecture, a network of rivers and canals, and more than 30 ancient bridges. Start your day by taking a scenic boat ride to explore the town’s maze of waterways.
Next, head to the Fangsheng Bridge, also known as the “Setting-fish-free Bridge,” where you can feed the fish and turtles in the canal. From there, wander through the old streets and alleyways, stopping to admire the traditional courtyards, temples, and shops selling handicrafts and souvenirs.
Don’t miss the Kezhi Garden, a beautiful classical Chinese garden with winding paths, rockeries, and water features. End the day with a taste of local snacks, such as sweet glutinous rice dumplings or fried rice cakes, at one of the many food stalls lining the streets.
Day 2: Suzhou
Located just an hour’s train ride from Shanghai, Suzhou is famed for its elegant classical gardens, picturesque canals, and silk production. Start your day in one of Suzhou’s many gardens, such as the Humble Administrator's Garden or the Lion Grove Garden, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Next, take a leisurely stroll along the canals and visit historic landmarks such as the Panmen City Gate and the Suzhou Museum. For lunch, try some of Suzhou’s famous dishes, such as sweet and sour Mandarin fish, crab meat dumplings, or steamed pork belly.
In the afternoon, visit the Suzhou Silk Museum to learn about the history of silk production, see live silkworms, and watch skilled artisans at work. Finally, end the day with a boat tour along the Grand Canal, the longest and oldest artificial waterway in the world.
Day 3: Tianmenshan Mountain
If you’re looking for a scenic and adventurous day trip outside of Shanghai, consider visiting Tianmenshan Mountain in Zhangjiajie City. The mountain is famous for its steep cliffs, lush valleys, and stunning views from its cable car and glass skywalk.
Start the day by taking the cable car up to the summit, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and forests. From there, walk on the glass skywalk that extends over a sheer drop of 4,700 feet.
In the afternoon, take a leisurely walk through Tianmenshan National Forest Park, which is home to rare plant and animal species, including the endangered South China tiger. Don’t miss the natural stone arch, the Glass Skywalk, and the winding 99-bend road down the mountain.
Finally, end the day by enjoying a meal of local delicacies, such as spicy fish hotpot or cumin lamb, in one of the many restaurants near the mountain.
